7 Rental Scam Red Flags (and How to Avoid Losing a Deposit)
June 20, 2026 · 5 min read
Rental scams are everywhere on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and even legitimate-looking sites. The good news: almost all of them share the same handful of tells. Spot one and you can walk away before losing money.
1. They want money before you see the place
The number one red flag. No legitimate landlord needs a wire transfer, gift cards, or a cash-app payment to "hold" a unit you haven't toured.
2. The "owner" is out of the country
A classic script: they're traveling, on a mission, or deployed, so they can't show you the place — but will mail the keys after you pay. It's fake.
3. The price is too good to be true
Scammers lure you with rent well below market. If it's far cheaper than everything comparable nearby, be suspicious.
4. Pressure to act immediately
"Lots of people are interested, send a deposit today." Manufactured urgency exists to stop you from doing basic checks.
5. No screening at all
"No credit check, no background check, anyone approved." Real landlords almost always screen tenants.
6. They push you off-platform
Moving you to private email or text avoids the platform's protections and reviews.
7. They ask for sensitive info up front
Your SSN, bank details, or ID copies before you've even seen the place can lead to identity theft on top of a stolen deposit.
When in doubt, see the unit in person, verify who actually owns it, and never pay before signing a real lease.
