How to tell if a rental listing is a scam

Rental scams almost always share the same handful of tells. Any one of these is a reason to slow down; two or more is a reason to walk away:

• You're asked to pay before you can see the unit - a deposit, “holding fee,” or first month before an in-person or live video tour.
• The “owner” is conveniently unreachable - out of the country, on a mission trip, or will “mail the keys” after you pay.
• The price is well below market for the area and photos - a great deal designed to make you move fast.
• Payment by wire, gift card, Zelle, Cash App, or crypto - untraceable methods a legitimate landlord won't insist on for a deposit.
• Pressure and urgency - “several other applicants,” act today, or the photos look copied from a for-sale or other listing.

The detector above scans a listing or message for exactly these patterns. A quick manual check that pairs with it: reverse-image-search the photos and search the address - if the same pictures appear on other listings under different names, or the “rental” is actually a home for sale, it's a scam.

What to do if you think you've been scammed

Stop all contact and don't send anything more. Report the listing to the platform (Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Zillow) so it comes down, and report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you already sent money, contact your bank or payment app immediately - with a wire or transfer, fast action occasionally allows a reversal. Once you've found a real place, run the lease through the red-flag checker before you sign.
