Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a rental listing is a scam?
Watch for the classic signs: being asked to pay before you can see the place, an 'owner' who's out of the country, a price far below market, pressure to act immediately, and requests to pay by wire, gift card, or cash app. Our detector scans a listing for all of these.
What should I never do when renting online?
Never send money — especially by wire transfer, gift card, or a cash app — before you've toured the unit in person and verified who actually owns it. Untraceable payments are how scammers cash out.
I think I've been scammed — what should I do?
Stop contact, report the listing to the platform, and report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you sent money, contact your bank or payment provider immediately — fast action sometimes allows a reversal.
