Renters insurance clause

A lease requirement that you carry renters insurance, often with minimum coverage.

Many leases require renters insurance - typically $100,000 of liability coverage, sometimes naming the landlord as an 'interested party' so they're notified if it lapses. Requiring it is legal in most states.

It's one of the few lease requirements that mostly benefits you too: your belongings aren't covered by the landlord's policy, ever.

Watch out

'Interested party' is fine; being named as an 'additional insured' on your policy is not standard for landlords - question that wording.
