Security deposits
Can my landlord keep my deposit for repainting?
Not for ordinary repainting. Faded or scuffed paint after a normal tenancy is classic normal wear and tear, which can't come out of a deposit. Crayon murals and unauthorized color changes are different.
Paint has a limited life, and courts treat routine repainting between tenants as the landlord's cost of doing business - especially after longer tenancies (many use a ~3-year paint lifespan as a guide).
You can be charged for damage beyond wear: large holes, smoke staining, or repainting over a color you changed without permission. Even then, charges should be prorated for the paint's remaining life, not billed as a full repaint.
