Security deposits
Can my landlord charge me more than my deposit?
Yes - the deposit is a first source of payment, not a liability cap. If legitimate damage or unpaid rent exceeds it, the landlord can bill you or sue for the difference.
A deposit secures your obligations; it doesn't limit them. Serious damage beyond the deposit amount can follow you as an invoice, a collection account, or a small-claims case.
The flip side: every extra dollar claimed needs the same proof as a deduction - itemization, actual costs, and damage beyond normal wear. Inflated move-out invoices collapse under a documented move-in record.
