Entry & privacy
Can my landlord put cameras in my rental?
Outside the building and in shared common areas, usually yes. Inside your private living space - and anywhere with an expectation of privacy - no.
Security cameras at entrances, parking lots, and hallways of multi-unit buildings are generally lawful. Cameras inside your unit are a different universe: recording your private living space violates privacy laws in essentially every state, and bathrooms or bedrooms can cross into criminal territory.
If you find a camera inside your unit, photograph it in place, don't destroy it, and contact local police and a tenant-rights organization. That's not a lease dispute - it's potentially a crime.
General educational information, not legal advice. Laws vary by state and city and change over time - for a specific situation, contact a local tenant-rights organization.
